During the Diamond Jubilee a picture of the Queen in 1958 making the first long distance call, without the help of an operator, appeared in the newspaper (here is one link).  How often do you dial a phone number?  I have notice that the Phone tile is not one that I have chosen for my smartphone.  Other tiles are there, notably People, Calendar and Email. Why would we “dial a number”, we communicate with people not numbers.  We need to communicate with voice, we can join conference calls, exchanging emails and messages, and by speaking we can call voice mail and send text or instance messages.  But how often do we call a phone number?  The change is reflected in the way the device has changed from a phone with a dial of numbers to a key pad and now to a flat screen with a rarely displayed keypad.
